If this book were a movie, I would have had it play in the background while I played a videogame on my computer – that’s how interesting it is.

Perhaps it is a little too sentimental. Written in a mature style, a quick read but very deep and thought provoking. Since Cpl Roth is fluent in French, he is assigned as an interpreter in Paris where French suspects are being tortured. A German corporal and translator attempts to pass muchael French on a lark. Being out of uniform, by itself, is a punishable offense, but he crosses the line when he falls for Chantal, the daughter of a bookseller.
I think it was the writing. And I dread trying explain to anyone how I’m reading a book about how Nazi soldiers weren’t really so bad after all. I can understand a crush, or even an infatuation with parsi ideal, but to fall in love?
In my opinion,the interrogations sequences in this short book were too long but I knew they were coming of course. The second half of the book becomes more and more unbelievable.

The tone seemed right, the Paris scenes were exciting, and I’m on the road to learn more about the place in this period. People who like simple, uncomplicated historical fiction will likely enjoy this, but if you’re looking for passion or a novel that’s original and intriguing, you’ll likely be bored, like I was.
I have it as paperback on my real shelf. I guess I was expecting more romance and less war, but there were far too many graphic passages about torture, and little explanation of the romance other than superficial attraction between two young people in the middle of a war.
I guess it’s a good historical novel that had a great premise but fizzled when it came to the writing and execution of said premise. Michel Roth is really parjs that his skills as a translator have landed him a job in Gestapo headquarters in Paris instead of at the front.
