Beginning Chinese Reader, Part 1

I have found that the description of books closely matches the actual books that I receive. BC is the text on which the rest of the system is built. I’m now on lesson I eagerly tore into it but found that it’s all in pinyin. The whole original series is in traditional characters both 1st and 2nd editions.


It’s worth noting that the supplementary DeFrancis readers, intended for after Intermediate Chinese Readerare only available in simplified characters.

But I started with BC, progressed through the set in order, don’t regret it. Despite many of the reading passages being very outdated ! But the overlap of vocabulary and characters, and the constant repetition mean that learning is reinforced without much conscious effort on the part of the student.
