Unfortunately, “First and Only” never even came close to living up to all it’s hype. Not really sure why this book does. It is assumed that Tanith had one major sea or ocean and polar ice caps.
Why has it taken me 10 years to finally read this book that one of my good friends told ean to read back then? Gaunt battled with his senses to keep awake, to get up, to run.
They seem to be well-rounded at nearly everything, or at least having those specialists close gauunt hand. The cap badge for the Tanith is a wreath-surrounded skull with three daggers behind it; each dagger representing a Tanith regiment. While I used to play a lot of Warhammer RPG back in the day and I thought it was pretty great, because it had the most actual role playing of all role playing games I’ve triedI really did not know much about Warhammer 40K, the crazy, violent, battle-ravaged universe this novel is based in.

During Blood Pactset two years after the events on Jago, the Tanith First has spent roughly eighteen months performing garrison duties on Balhaut. This goes on for a third of the book without Abnett even making the slightest effort at developing even one character among the entire ensemble, thereby creating a huge waste of time. The second is a fictional history of the Crusade, from the beginnings of the crusade 10 years before the setting of the first novel to a point just after Sabbat Martyrproviding an overview of the crusade as a whole.
It really gives the feeling that the writer is sitting there with a th I desperately wanted to love, or at least like, First and Only. Thanks for telling us about the problem. I was counting the death toll on the First and only regiment trough the gxunt and seriously they would not make it trough the one book.
As the Ghosts withdraw, General Noches Sturm of the Royal Volpone and his adjutant, Major Gilbear, both of whom were disdainful of Gaunt and his “low-born” soldiers, order the Ketzok to bombard the Tanith as they fall back to their base. The second novel gsunt Horus Rising by Dan Abnett — what a brilliant piece of science fiction mangasm prose that was.
At the end of this battle, the Ghosts lost an excellent leader, Serg. The Gaunt’s Ghosts series of books have been said to be inspired heavily by the Sharpe series of books written by Bernard Cornwell.
