The book features numerous hands-on projects that can dramatically increase the performance of home and small business Wi-Fi systems. I was given this book as a gift of appreciation for contributing news items to Netstumbler.

I’ve been using wi-fi for a little over a year now and I bought a number if the books that were published over the past year–big disapointment there. The presentation focuses on the human element more than technology jargon, with all the strange stories and oddball characters that have made Wi-Fi a culture of its own within the larger culture of personal computing.

If you already have WLAN access at your home or small office and are interested in tweaking; tuning or expanding it, this book is for you. The fourth part deals with extending the range of your laptop and some of the secrets behind wardriving.

Details are still a little sparse, but the guidf of what they’re doing is creating a system using a steerable array of many small Wi-Fi gain antennas that can literally follow an individual user as that user walks around within range of the array. This one’s worth watching, and I’ll speak of it more once I get a better sense for how it works.

I wrote it for home office and small office users, rather than corporate IT types. We hope to do an antenna shootout at some point, along with compatibility testing of gear from different manufacturers, and so on. I just recently came across this book because a friend suggested I get it.
